Sod is a dug-up layer of established grass with roots and some soil still attached. It is harvested in long strips by sod farms and rolled up, soil side out. Always purchase sod that can be harvested and delivered the same day it will be installed in your yard. Sod laid down more than 24 hours after harvesting may not survive, resulting in a significant waste of time, effort, and money.

Strong turf needs plenty of suns, and shade-grown grass is weaker and more susceptible to disease since it stays covered with dew longer. Water shady spots less often and reduce fertilizer by 25 percent.
